Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the strategies adopted by news users over 60 years of age in Argentina to detect and verify information they received through the WhatsApp messaging service during 2020 in Argentina.

The work sheds light on the actions and perceptions of this age group, which is considered one of the most vulnerable to disinformation campaigns (Guess, Nagler and Tucker, 2019; Gottfried and Grieco, 2018).

Based on the analysis of 40 in-depth interviews, we identified some of the digital skills of this group and their skills and strategies to verify information, as well as rehearse media literacy proposals to counter disinformation campaigns.

Based on the data obtained, we present a typology that classifies the profiles and practices of users in relation to the information they receive and disseminate through the WhatsApp platform.

This research was supported by the TechCamp program of the United States Department of State.
