Abstract

Tolkien has produced the largest and most consistent mythological system of the 20th century, and according to several experts, of all times, because his work is not only about the episodes and adventures of the hero, but has given birth to a whole world.

In this communication we will try to account for that statement, especially in regard to his conception of evil as an aesthetic failure and the very particular use that the author makes of language.

However, if this work has its point of originality, we believe that it is in the way in which it tries to relate this conception to the psychoanalytic theory invented by Sigmund Freud and revised by Melanie Klein and Jacques Lacan.
